Letters and obituary of Dr. Henry Clay Sommerville, 1861-1918.

Civil War letters are from his sister Louisa, friend "Molly" and friend "J. T.," a tutor at "Castalia," Albemarle County, Va. Topics include Civil War news from Romney, [West] Virginia, 1861, and Sommerville's pro-Union sentiments; encouraging war news from Front Royal, 1863; a brief comment on the need for improvement in Southern literature; and the disappearance of Yankee raiders from Albemarle County, 1863. A post-war letter, 1865, from W. [T.?] Pryor, Evergreen, Ala., discusses crops, family and friends. An 1880 letter from Sommerville to a West Virginia delegate discusses the donation a a small plot of land to the Shenandoah Valley Rail Road. The collection also contains a copy of a manuscript obituary for Sommerville, 1918.
